A school trip to Zaragoza offers students a balanced mix of history, art and natural landscapes in one compact region of Aragón. The city grew from the Roman Caesaraugusta and later became a crossroads of Islamic, Jewish and Christian cultures, visible today in the Cathedral of La Seo, the Aljafería Palace and the Baroque towers of the Basilica del Pilar. Walking through the historic centre, students will encounter different architectural periods within a few streets, making Zaragoza an ideal setting for hands-on learning.

Beyond the monuments, the programme introduces pupils to two essential figures of Aragonese heritage: Francisco de Goya, whose birthplace and engravings reveal the roots of his artistic evolution, and the unique villages and landscapes surrounding the city. The visit to Belchite brings historical reflection, while the Mallos and the Castle of Loarre open the door to Aragon’s geology and medieval past.

The itinerary is designed to keep transitions simple and the learning clear, giving teachers a structured programme that supports classroom goals while remaining enjoyable and accessible to students.

Day 1 – First steps in Zaragoza
You will explore the historic centre, starting with the Basilica del Pilar, where students will observe Baroque domes and painted vaults up close. The visit continues at La Seo, known for its blend of medieval styles, and La Lonja, a Renaissance landmark ideal for introducing trade and civic life in the 16th century.

Day 2 – Roman roots and Islamic architecture
Students will discover the Roman remains of Caesaraugusta, visiting the Forum, Theatre, Baths and Port to understand the city’s original layout. Afterwards, the group will explore the Aljafería Palace, an essential example of Islamic architecture in Aragón, before ending the day with a ceramics workshop focused on traditional techniques.

Day 3 – Goya and the history of Aragón
The day begins in Fuendetodos, where pupils will visit Goya’s birthplace and learn about his early life. The Museum of Engraving introduces his graphic work, followed by a simple workshop where students create their own metal-plate designs. In the afternoon, the visit to Belchite offers context on the events that shaped the village during the Spanish Civil War.

Day 4 – Medieval heritage and natural landscapes
You will travel to the Castle of Loarre, a key example of Romanesque military architecture. The visit provides clear links to medieval society and castle defence. Afterwards, a guided hike in the Mallos reveals the region’s geological formations, giving students a direct encounter with Aragón’s natural environment.
